Joint is a contemporary workshop built around modern craft. We combine traditional making techniques with clean, functional design and a subtle future-facing edge. The work is grounded in real materials — locally sourced timber, honest processes — and shaped with precision and material understanding. It’s about creating space to think, make, and connect: to the material, to the process, and a clear connection to the natural world.

An interior space with a white brick wall, a wooden bench, a rustic wooden ladder, an old storage trunk, and a tiled floor.

About Joint

Joint is a space for making, learning, and working with wood in a way that is thoughtful, sustainable, and human.

We exist to reconnect people with craft—through the act of making, through shared knowledge, and through a deeper understanding of the materials we use. At its core, Joint is about slowing down, working with intention, and creating things that matter.

What We Do

Courses

We run practical, hands-on woodworking and craft courses for all levels.

From first-time makers to experienced craftspeople, our courses are designed to build confidence, develop skill, and give people a genuine connection to making. Whether it’s a one-day introduction or a longer journey into furniture making, the focus is always the same: learn by doing, in a supportive and calm environment.

Commissions

We design and make bespoke pieces that are built to last.

Our commission work ranges from furniture to interiors and one-off objects. Every piece is considered—shaped by the material, the context, and the people it’s made for. We work closely with clients to create work that feels honest, functional, and enduring.

Collaborations

We work with makers, designers, and businesses across different sectors.

Collaboration is central to Joint. We partner with others to develop products, projects, and ideas that bring together different skills and perspectives. These collaborations are an opportunity to explore new ways of working while promoting good design, craftsmanship, and sustainability.

Sustainability

Sustainability isn’t an add-on—it’s embedded in how we work.

We prioritise locally sourced and responsibly managed timber, and we’re committed to making better use of materials at every stage. That means thoughtful design, efficient processes, and a focus on longevity over disposability.

Beyond our own work, we aim to share knowledge—helping others understand where materials come from, how they can be used responsibly, and why it matters.

Welfare

Joint is as much about people as it is about making.

We believe working with your hands can be grounding, restorative, and deeply rewarding. Our space is designed to be calm, inclusive, and supportive—a place where people feel welcome, capable, and connected.

Whether someone is here to learn a new skill, take time out, or build something meaningful, we place equal value on wellbeing and craftsmanship.

Location

Nestled in the beautiful South Devon countryside overlooking the Dart Valley, between Dartmouth and Totnes, Joint is based at Longlands Workshops — a creative hub of woodwork, craft and art businesses set within a peaceful rural setting. Formerly the site of Carpenter Oak, the workshops are now home to a thriving community of makers, alongside a yoga studio housed within a beautiful timber-framed showroom.

Joint’s workshop offers a unique contemporary teaching space for up to eight students, designed to feel calm, practical and inspiring in equal measure. Alongside the main studio is a dedicated machine room, allowing students to safely explore both traditional hand skills and modern woodworking techniques.

Longlands itself is a destination worth visiting. Carefully tended planting weaves between the workshops, while a wilder garden area includes a cabin, pond and even a pair of axe-throwing alleys — creating a setting that feels creative, grounded and quietly adventurous all at once.
